Realizing dreams: How to develop your goals?

January 27, 2014

Last week, I was at several brainstorm sessions and workshops on planning for the future, for 2014 as a participant but also as a facilitator. And since my work for LES is also related to coaching, facilitation and presentations on (self/inner) development, leadership and planning, I thought it would be good to share some ideas on how you can develop your own vision, actions and skills necessary to reach that vision.

First of all, it is important to brainstorm on what goals you want to reach. An overall aim. A vision and mission. But that’s more easily said than done. So how do you come to an answer on this? It is important to look within yourself. What drives you? What is your passion? When do you feel warm and energetic inside? Full of positive energy? For me for instance, that is anything related to sustainability, working on a better future, travelling, sports, (inner) development and existence. So what is that for you? Write it down on a big piece of paper.

Second, then it becomes easier once you have your overall aim because now you can start brainstorming about what is necessary to reach that goal. Which actions and sub-aims are necessary to reach that overall aim? Write it under the overall aim.

Third, write down under the actions what is necessary in terms of skills, expertise, network, knowledge, finances, and the like to reach that aim and those activities. What is still lacking and what needs to be developed?

The next step is to start exploring it in real life. In the beginning you may feel some anxiety, uncomfortable, insecure, or the like, but once the ball starts rolling and you start believing in that it can actually happen, you will increase confidence, self-esteem and positive energy.

Note: There are different ways to approach this, so don’t take it as a strict blue print but play with it yourself as well. As on the picture of an overview of different activities I'm involved with, to keep an overview and structure.

Tip: What is useful is to use different colors of post-its for the vision/aim, actions and skills necessary to reach those actions.

Share: do you have questions? Remarks? Tips? Ideas and actions you want to share? Please do so below and we can start a thread on realizing dreams.
