tips & tricks

Today, I will give a presentation about entrepeneurship at the Wageningen University (see also Presenting 2.0). Therefore, I thought it would be interesting for the first blog of 2015 to write about entrepreneurship in general.
I started being an entrepreneur only since 2011, and since 2014 full time. I never thought about it before as my main goal in life, yet it suits me well. It´s the freedom, the passion, the networking and the creativity to realize your own dreams of making the world a better place which is so appealing to me.
First of all the freedom: freedom has an upside and a downside. I'm a strong proponent of that everyone should feel and be free in it's core, yet recognizing the needs, wants and respect for others. The freedom to choose what you want to do per day is so empowering, like A. Sen also argues in his book Development as Freedom. Freedom gives me energy. Yet, freedom also has a downside since it can shift you from one angle to the other or your own discipline can be weakened by it. This therefore needs to be dealt with in an accurate manner: not some stricts rules and regulations for oneself, but some groundrules with flexibility in them to move from one to the other when necessary. Further see: Freedom, friendship, and moments of inspiration & Freedom and Society.
The passion is what you need as an entrerpreneur to even start doing it. You need passion for your work, since the appeals to people and then you can have the clients signing a deal with you. Your passion transmits to others, and is inspiring.
Networking is essential for an entrepreneur. Indeed, through networking you get your clients, at least that's most of the time the case. Networking is a kind of sport since you will start with one, and go from there to the next. Yet, beware not to start looking to others maybe more interesting while having a conversation with somebody. More often, letting go gives you more then puposefully looking for the 'right' one. So having no agenda during a networking event is sometimes more relaxing and gives better ''fruits'' then with an agenda. So let go, and go with the flow of serendepity. With freedom, passion, networking and inspiration, creativity comes itself. I think everyone can be creative, under the condition you think out of the box. For that, you need to let go for a moment your groundrules and 'in the box thinking'. Once you know how you can be creative, you will want to do it more and more. It's addictive to be creative because of the positive energy it generates.
So be free, network, let go, set some groundrules and be creative! And be authentic.
