Earth Day Nijmegen 2008

I was the coordinator & Initiator of Earth Day, April 22, 2008 at the Radboud University Nijmegen, with a report on the sustainability scan of the university and policy advise.

For a long time already some students wanted to do a critical analyses on the environmental and sustainability policy of the Radboud University, Nijmegen.

Finally, in 2008 we did it! As initiator and coordinator of Earth Day Nijmegen 2008 and the chair of Milieuprisma (study organization of environmental studies) I organized a group with students, teachers and policymakers of the Radboud University.

We did a sustainability scan on the Radboud University and organized events on the campus for Earth Day, April 22, 2008. There were: workshops, information stands from different organizations, a debate regarding the energy policy of the university and in the evening drinks and the movie ‘The 11th Hour’ by Leonardo di Caprio. The day was organized in order to make students, teachers and other employers of the Radboud University more aware of their environment, environmental problems, and to act upon those problems.

I, together with some others, wrote a report on the day and the scan (see below). This report also includes advise and ideas for improvement of the university’s environmental policy, which came about during the debate on Earth Day.

After 2008, Earth Day Nijmegen (Radboud University) has been celebrated and organized every year. Furthermore, a sustainability working group has been set up and meets regularly ever since.

I was inspired to organize this day due to my study at the University of Tennessee, USA in 2007, my participation of the first American Power Shift in 2007, Washington D.C. , and my bachelor thesis (see project ‘Bachelor thesis’ ).

Earth Day is an annual international celebration day for our planet on April 22.
